How to Spot a Fake Victor Wembanyama Autograph
Wemby's hot signature gets faked constantly. Learn the one license fact that unmasks most fakes instantly — his certified autos are Fanatics/Topps-exclusive, so a 'Panini-certified Wemby auto' cannot be real — plus how to verify PSA/DNA, Beckett, and JSA certifications on hand-signed items.

Victor Wembanyama is one of the most-faked signatures in the modern hobby for a simple reason: he’s the 7’4” #1 overall pick and 2024 Rookie of the Year, his authentic autos are genuinely scarce, and demand is enormous. Wherever that much money chases that few real signatures, forgers follow. This guide shows you how to tell a real Wemby autograph from a fake — starting with one license fact that unmasks a huge share of fakes before you even zoom in on the ink.
The fact that beats most fakes instantly
Wembanyama’s autograph deal is exclusive to Fanatics/Topps. His certified signature appears in no Panini product.
Panini held the 2023-24 NBA license, so his flagship rookie cards — Prizm, National Treasures, Contenders — are Panini. But the signature lane belongs entirely to Topps. That means any listing claiming a Panini-certified Wemby autograph — a “National Treasures RPA,” a “Contenders Rookie Ticket auto,” a “Court Kings Fresh Paint auto” — is by definition not authentic as described. It’s a custom, an art card, or a mislabeled listing. You don’t need a loupe, an exemplar, or an authenticator to reject it; the card it claims to be was never made. His real National Treasures chases are the unsigned Rookie Patches #154 /99 and the Logoman cuts above it, and his Contenders ticket is the unsigned Rookie Ticket Swatches #6.
So the first authentication step on any “certified Wemby auto” is just reading the brand on the card.
What his real certified autographs are
His factory-certified signatures all live in the Fanatics/Topps catalog:
- Topps Mercury — his premium lane: on-card autographs and his true rookie patch autographs (signature plus game-worn material), serial-numbered.
- Bowman U Chrome — his earliest certified autos, the classic entry point into a genuine Wemby signature.
- Topps Now and Topps’ online releases — on-card autographs sold as sealed online-exclusive items, serial-numbered to 99 or lower.
One nuance that confuses buyers in both directions: his 2022-24 Topps and Bowman autos carry no NBA team logos, because Panini held the NBA license when they were made. That’s normal for the lane — not a red flag. Since Topps took over the NBA license for 2025-26, his newest Topps certified autos do appear in fully NBA-licensed products. Either way, the autograph checklist maps every real signature lane tier by tier.
Because these were signed for the card set under Topps’ certification, the authenticity is built in — the work was done at the factory. Some early autos were even fulfilled as redemptions shipped straight from Topps, which makes them factory-direct by definition; see Wemby autograph redemptions explained.
The other real lane: hand-signed items and third-party authentication
Separate from factory-certified cards is the hand-signed market: cards, photos, balls, and jerseys signed in person or at private signings. These can be perfectly genuine — but the signature itself proves nothing without authentication from a reputable third party:
- PSA/DNA
- Beckett Authentication Services (BAS)
- JSA (James Spence Authentication)
Each issues a unique certification number. Don’t take the sticker or the slab at face value — do this:
- Find the cert number on the label or COA.
- Enter it into that authenticator’s own online cert-verification lookup.
- Confirm the item type, description, and photos on the authenticator’s site match the item in the listing.
If the number doesn’t resolve, the details don’t match, or the seller can’t produce a number at all, walk away. Forgers reprint labels and invent official-looking COAs — the online database is the check they can’t fake.
Red flags that scream “fake”
- Any Panini-branded “certified auto.” The instant disqualifier covered above — the most common Wemby-specific fake framing on the market.
- Seller-made certificates. A COA is only as trustworthy as who signed it. A generic certificate from an unknown seller protects no one.
- A price that’s too good to be true. An “authentic on-card Wemby auto” at a fraction of the going rate is the oldest trick in the book. Price against sold eBay comps, not the asking price.
- Autopen and too-perfect strokes. Machine or traced signatures often look unnaturally uniform, with identical pressure and no hesitation. Compare against known authentic exemplars — his certified Topps autos are the reference set.
- Signature that doesn’t match. Wemby’s signature has a consistent structure; a version with the wrong letter forms or flow is a warning sign.
- Vague provenance. “Signed at an event” with no photo proof, no authentication, and no cert number is a story, not evidence.
Use eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee
eBay runs an Authenticity Guarantee program for trading cards above a value threshold: qualifying cards are routed through independent authenticators before they reach you, and graded/slabbed cards are verified as genuine. When you’re shopping for a Wemby auto, prefer listings that are already graded or covered by that guarantee — it puts a professional set of eyes on the card before your money is at risk.
You can browse certified and graded Wemby autographs on our Victor Wembanyama autographs & top cards page, which pulls live eBay listings for Topps Mercury autos, on-card signatures, and graded hits.
The one rule that beats nearly every fake
If you remember nothing else: for anything with real value, buy it certified or graded — and make sure “certified” means Topps. A factory Topps auto or a third-party-authenticated slab removes the guesswork that forgers depend on. It’s the same principle behind grading any valuable Wemby card — authentication turns “trust me” into “verified.”
